At 3 years 2 months and 1 day, Eliza experienced two firsts that every parent hopes and prays their children will never have to experience. On Monday May 16, 2011 Eliza made her first trip to the emergency room due to her first broken bone.
While playing outside at school, Eliza tripped (we are unclear as to what she tripped over) and fell landing on her wrist. As soon as I saw her arm, I knew that we were ER bound ASAP. It was obvious that she was in pain, but with her trusty dog, Coco by her side, she was able to put on her best brave face.

After getting changed into a gown, they brought the X ray machine to her and took her films right in the room. The X ray confirmed that she did indeed have a broken arm. She broke both her radius and ulna at the wrist.
The ER doctor put her arm in a splint and we will see a pediatric orthopedic specialist soon. In the meantime, we are all in awe of how extraordinarily well she is handling all of this. She is one tough little girl and her doctor at the ER said that she won the "cutest kid" award as well as the "toughest kid" award.
Since the break occurred on her left arm and she is right handed, she is still able to enjoy her new favorite hobby . . . . playing on the I Pad. After this traumatic experience, she was so happy to have some I Pad time that she didn't even seem to mind having the ice bag on her arm.
She hasn't been a big fan of her wearing her sling, so we went to Michael's to find some iron on decals to "girly"it up a bit. She picked the oh so girly pink ballet shoes for her sling.
Eliza, Grandaddy and I are very proud of how brave you have been.We hope your arm gets well real soon.
ReplyDeleteLove you,

Poor little mamas. I think you win the, "Coolest mom" award for putting ballet slippers on her sling.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I am so sorry Eliza had to experience this. And you, her parents, too! If you want to look on the plus side, there are actually several. She is young and will heal quickly and at least she's not in school yet. I broke my right arm in 3rd grade and my left in 5th grade. Going to school with a cast and trying to write is NO FUN. Hopefully she'll be out of her cast in time for some summer swimming.
ReplyDeleteOh I am so sorry, we know all about broken bones and orthopedic specialists. I know she will pick an awesome cast color. Give her a big hug from all of us.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Poor thing! I am not surprised she is being so brave, but I know it must be heartbreaking for her mom and dad. :( Hope she heals very, very quickly. (As an aside, she and her second cousin have so many of the same outfits! N's current favorite is that blue and white dress with the green trim she's sporting in the ER pic).
ReplyDeleteHello...I am a friend of Natalie's and I "peek" at your blog every so often to watch your adorable girl grow...I've never commented but had to on this post. So sorry to hear about Eliza's arm what a bummer. My comment is really about iPAd's what did we do without them? My 2 year old daughter spent 5 days in the hospital in April and we would not have survived without our iPad we had just gotten it. Hope your little one feels better soon!
